Dan has been a member of SFTE since 1981, was Seattle Chapter President in 1982, Chapter Vice-President in 1985, a Member of the 2001 Seattle Symposium Committee, and is currently a Senior Member of the Society.

Dan has given extensive presentations to the Society and other symposia as well as writing a section in the SFTE Reference Handbook:

  • Presented "EM//EMC for Flight Test" for SFTE Workshop in Reno, NV. in 2006
  • Presented"What Flight Test Crews Need to Know about EMI/EMC' for Aerospace Testing Expo in Hamburg in 2005
  • Prepared Section 14 in the SFTE Handbook in 2005 "Electromagnetic Compatibility Reference"
  • Presented "EMI/EMC for Flight Test" for SFTE Workshop in Portsmouth Va. in 2003.
  • Prepared"Safety Considerations Regarding Flight Test Instrumentation Installations" workshop for the SETP Flight Test Safety Workshop in Long Beach in 2002.
  • "737 Fuel Tank Ground Based Inerting: Test Program Review and Safety Analysis" for the SFTE symposium in Seattle in 2001 co-authored with Dan Hedges.
  • "What Instrumentation Engineers Need to Know about Lightning" for the SFTE symposium in Turin, Italy, and won Best of Session award in 2000.
  • "Certifying and Flight Testing a Portable Data Recording System for In-service Use" for SFTE symposium in Reno in 1996.
  • "Flight Testing the Flight Management Computer on the 747-400",co-authored with Roger Nicholson, 20th Annual SFTE Symposium in Reno in 1989.

He is a Designated Engineering Representative/Authorized Representative to accept the results of flight test on the behalf of the FAA, and has several other licenses and qualifications:

  • FAA Flight Test Analyst DER/AR, NM-1764, Auto Flight Controls and Nav/Comm.
  • FAA Systems and Equipment DER/AR for Instrumentation and PADDS data systems.
  • Professional Engineer, State of Washington in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Private Pilot, Single Engine Land, approximately 700 hours
  • FCC Amateur Radio Operator, Extra Class License

Dan has a BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio State University (1987), a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Cogswell College North (1984), and is pursuing a Masters in Teaching degree at Seattle Pacific University. He has also completed 15 semester credits of under graduate Electrical Engineering courses at Henry Cogswell College, in Everett Dan has been employed at The Boeing Company since 1978. His Career Highlights include:

  • FMC Testing - Almost 30 years testing avionics equipment on the Boeing models to include the flight management computers, autopilot and all other avionics systems. Published SFTE paper describing FMC testing.
  • Data Systems Cert - Certified small data systems to FAR Part 25 requirements for use during airline in-service use. Developed the procedures and published SFTE paper describing the process. Certified dozens of data system in-service installations for airline customers.
  • Lightning Protection - Brought awareness to the flight test organization of the hazards of lightning with instrumentation wiring that extends outside the pressure vessel. Established the guidelines and the process for the organization to follow. Published an SFTE paper describing the issues and remedies for instrumentation outside the pressure vessel.
  • EMI - Raised the level of understanding to the flight test organization and FAA flight test of electromagnetic interference and the implications for flight test crews. Prepared the EMC for Flight workshop and presented to all members of the Boeing flight test organization as well as at several SFTE Symposiums. Prepared a section in the SFTE Handbook on this subject.
  • Safety of Flight - Prepared the procedure and checklist that approves carry-on test equipment for on-board tests and connects to airplane systems. Used that procedure to review and approve several dozen requests for test equipment and laptop installations on test aircraft.
