You will work with product development teams on new products, solve difficult engineering problems, and work toward certification for Garmin avionic installation in FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) 23, 25, 27 and 29 aircraft.

We are looking for aviation professionals for a Flight Test Engineer 2:

The Flight Test Engineer 2 will Perform moderately complex flight testing activities including developing ground and flight test plans, coordinating and executing flight tests, documenting results and ensuring resolution to issues identified during flight testing. Essential functions include:

  • Drafts ground and flight test plans and reports for moderately complex test programs derived from previous programs
  • Coordinates and executes moderately complex flight tests as part of a flight test crew, including acting as test director
  • Defines, documents, and maintains moderately complex test aircraft and equipment configurations, and coordinates with engineering teams
  • Operates flight test tools, conducts real-time data analysis, and post-processes flight test data.
  • Identifies root cause and verifies that issues identified during flight test are resolved
  • Prepares moderately complex avionics system installation data for test aircraft.
  • Leverages basic understanding of certification process and associated regulations in performance of role
  • Offers suggestions to improve processes and the safety of the flight test organization
  • Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem-solving techniques
  • Serves as a mentor to less experienced flight test engineers (Flight Test Engineer 1)

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Computer Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of one-year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience with excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule). Other required skills include:

  • Demonstrates proficient use of engineering and flight test tools
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of certification processes and associated regulations
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must demonstrate the capability to perform advanced troubleshooting skills on moderately complex avionics installations

Preferred candidates will have superior academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5), Pilot or aircraft maintenance certification, previous use of aviation products and experience with revision control tools, mobile application development, audio/video recording tools, or database tools.

413th Flight Test Squadron Job Opening

About the 413th Flight Test Squadron (FLTS):

The 413FLTS is a Squadron that has locations at Hurlburt Field and Duke Fields in the Eglin Range Complex, plus a detachment at Nellis AFB, NV.   This Squadron is one of many within the 96th Test Wing at Eglin AFB, FL.  The 413FLTS is the only Rotary Wing Test Organization within the US Air Force and currently conducts test operations for sustainment activities on CV-22 Osprey, HH-60 Black Hawk, and UH-1N Huey.  In addition, the 413FLTS is preparing to test the Combat Rescue Helicopter (HH-60W) and a future UH-1 Replacement Helicopter.

Multiple Position Openings:

Flight Test Engineer

Grade:  TERM Overhire GS-0801-13

Salary Range:  $87,252 - $113,428 depending upon experience.

Education:  Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required.  Graduate of an accredited Test Pilot School is desirable.

Experience:  Minimum 2 years of flight test experience preparing test plans, flight cards, test conductor (either airborne or from a control room), analyzing test data, and writing reports on test results.  Rotary Wing flight test experience in performance, flying and handling qualities and system integration is desirable. 

Requirements:  The position requires excellent organizational, technical, verbal, and written communication skills.  Must have the availability to work overtime as required in flight test environment.  Must be able to obtain an FAA Class III Medical Certificate. 

Duties:  Work with an integrated test team of Pilots, Engineers, Special Mission Aviators (SMAs), Program Office, and Helicopter OEM.  Prepare test plans, conduct or support airborne flight test missions, and write test reports.  Support Safety Reviews Boards and attend required training events.

  • Programming Engineer:

Grade:  TERM Overhire GS-0801-12

Salary Range:  $73,375 to $95,388 annually, depending upon experience.

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) program.

Experience:  Minimum 2 years of flight test experience either as a flight test conductor or in test planning support role.  Rotary Wing flight test experience is desirable.  

Duties:  Responsible for preparing cost estimates, securing test resources, tracking expenditures, progress reporting, and overall managing projects throughout test phase.

  • Airborne Instrumentation Engineer

GRADE:  TERM Overhire GS-855-12

SALARY RANGE:   $73,375 to $95,388 annually, depending upon experience.

Education:  BS in electrical engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) program.

Experience:  Minimum 2 years of electrical engineering, preferably in airborne instrumentation.

Duties: Serves as an Electronics Engineer in the connection with the design and modification of airborne instrumentation systems for aerospace vehicles, including the coordination effort for the assembly, calibration, installation, and data gathering activities of such systems.  Instrumentation includes equipment and techniques in the fields of electronics photography, optics: such as analog and digital data acquisition systems, telemetry, data recorder, film, and video cameras.  Engineering work is performed in support of rotary wing test and evaluation.

  • Data Analyst

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Operations Research Analyst

GRADE:  Term Overhire GS-1515-12

SALARY RANGE:  $73,375 to $95,388 annually, depending upon experience.

Education:  BS in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, engineering, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.

Experience:  Minimum 2 years of performing operations research or data analysis.

Duties: Serves as Data Analyst for the reduction and analysis from flight test data obtained from rotary wing instrumentation systems.

Responsibilities

To support the Global Hawk (RQ-4) program. Possess a thorough understanding of air vehicle system architecture, air vehicle design, subsystems integration, mission systems and avionics. Understand and track system operation limitations and ensure flight test execution is accomplished within the constraints of vehicle system limitations, safely and efficiently. The selected candidate must have 10+ years' aerospace experience and an outstanding record as a Test Director (salary will be competitive, based on experience):

  • Understanding of the National Air Space/FAA, as well as test range controlling authorities and respective regulations.
  • Understanding of mechanical/electrical aircraft systems, sub-systems, and components to support proper test plans and disciplined flight test.
  • Supports test program for design reviews, scheduling, liaison with test ranges. Etc.
  • Supports flight test of avionics systems, and sensor testing.
  • Support generation of post flight mission reports and other detailed formal reports.
  • Work exceptionally well in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Position requires willingness to accept changing and evolving roles & responsibilities in support of customers’ requirements and needs.
  • Desired: Experience in Electronic Warfare and RF/IR CM.
  • Desired: Experience with mission systems integration.
  • Desired: Experience as aircrew member (Pilot, EWO, NAV, etc.)
  • Experience in Mission Systems, Aero Performance/Flight Envelope Expansion and Vehicle Subsystems performance testing is a plus.
  • Private Pilot license is a plus but not required.
  • Test Pilot School graduate is a plus but not required.

Qualifications: An understanding of aviation principles, excellent organizational skills, exceptional maturity, reputation of being a team player and passion for flight test.

Education Requirements: BS in technical field or equivalent required; a relevant MS is desired. Clearance Requirements: Current Secret or Top Secret security clearance required
