Flight Test Engineer
Job Summary:
The Flight Test Engineer will plan, conduct and report on new and modified helicopters for experimental flight tests according to specifications. Work in a team environment to conduct helicopter flight testing in accordance with established flight test principles to achieve safe flight operations. Responsibilities:
- Write helicopter flight test plans
- Plan and conduct helicopter flight tests
- Coordinate test helicopter hangar activities including configuration changes, maintenance requirements, flight scheduling, and other activities as required
- Prepare test helicopter for flight tests by providing ballast/fuel/crew weight and balance calculations
- Participate as non-pilot crewmember during flight tests
- Log helicopter flight test time and events in electronic workbook and in CAFTA database
- Write helicopter flight test reports
- Contribute to overall department effort to plan and conduct safe flight test operations
Education: BS in Engineering, Math or related science discipline. BSAE or BSME preferred.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of flight test experience (helicopter, airplane or vectored thrust aircraft) or advanced degree. Be able to obtain a CONFIDENTIAL or SECRET clearance
- Capable and willing learner for the Bell Helicopter Electronic Workbook, CAFTA (both data manipulations and Configuration Management feature), BEDVu drawing review system, and Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel - the capability to use Microsoft Office macros for task automation and simplification is not required but is a plus
- Ability to be a leading member of the flight test team for experimental helicopters - this requires teamwork and collaborative problem solving in a multi-team environment
- Mathematically capable of performing GW-CG calculations, using aeronautical charts for navigation determinations, performance charts for helicopter performance determinations, and other helicopter testing related computations
- Must be physically capable of attaining a Class III FAA Flight Physical and must have 20/20 vision (corrected with glasses or contact lenses is acceptable)
- Willing to travel for flight test programs (generally no more than 5% of time)
- Must be fluent in English - required for voice radio communication to and from the test helicopter
- Must be knowledgeable of Federal Aviation Regulations, Advisory Circulars, and other regulatory materials pertaining to aircraft and component certification
- Preferred FAA Private Pilot license with about 200 hours as Pilot in Command - having an IFR rating is not required but will be appreciated

The National Test Pilot School (NTPS) is a not-for-profit educational institute meeting the flight test training needs of the US domestic and foreign aerospace industries and governments, both military and civil certification agencies. NTPS is the only civilian school of the seven largest test pilot schools in the world.
The primary objective of the NTPS is to educate and train test pilots and flight test engineers to be immediately capable upon graduation of participating in a military acceptance program, an aircraft development program within an aerospace company, or to complete a civil certification of a new or modified aircraft, either fixed-wing or rotary-wing. NTPS offers 32 unique courses, ranging from one-week, academic-only courses, to the 50-week Professional Course. Graduation from the latter also includes earning a graduate degree in flight test.
Flight Test Engineer Instructor and Test Pilot Instructor
The National Test Pilot School has several openings for experienced flight testers to teach all aspects of the flight test profession. The school has test and training aircraft, simulators, control room, and many other resources. Courses include all aspects of flight testing, with fundamental engineering principles, certification requirements, flight test techniques, and data analysis. FTE duties may include conducting flight instruction and onboard data assistant. Test Pilot duties include classroom and flight test instruction.
