Job Summary:
• Provide robust, effective, reliable, cost effective instrumentation solutions on all product development team projects.
Essential Duties:
• Lead development, installation, functional verification, and maintenance of test instrumentation, telemetry, and communication equipment.
• Coordinate with instrumentation contractors and suppliers.
• Gather and record test data.
• Maintain instrumentation and support project schedules.
• Maintain test equipment inventory and instrument calibrations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Verify that work completed by technicians meets the design and implementation intent.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering related discipline.
Engineering experience: 5 years.
Engineering Flight Test Instrumentation experience: 2 years.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
Experience with Flight Test Telemetry systems.
Experience with modern aircraft avionics systems technology.
Good communication, computer, leadership, organizational, and multitasking skills.
Understanding and application of EMI/RFI, signal shielding, and electrical bonding principles.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of computer programming, spreadsheet, word processing, Visio, and PowerPoint software.

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate and driven Flight Test Engineer to join our flight test team. This role requires a wide range of knowledge and skill associated with planning and execution of development and certification flight testing on experimental CTOL/VTOL fly-by-wire aircraft. Applicants will be responsible for flight test planning, test execution as a Test Director, test data analysis and flight test reporting, flight test simulator development, and other duties associated with air vehicle certification. Flight test at Joby Aviation is very fast-paced, and we are looking for independent individuals who can deal with frequently changing test scenarios. Previous experience and/or training as a Flight Test Engineer is highly desired. Near-term flight testing is planned to be conducted from a remote location; applicants must be willing to spend regular time away from home.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop a test program to expand the envelope and capabilities of our vehicles from experimental development through certification flight test
  • Perform detailed flight test planning, flight readiness reviews, flight briefs/debriefs, act as test director during test execution and perform post flight data analysis
  • Work with our simulation team to expand our flight simulator capability and fidelity
  • Complete all required documentation in accordance with established company and FAA procedures
  • May perform launch and recovery tasks of aircraft which include ground operations, preflight items, ground observer responsibilities, and post flight items
  • May help develop flight manuals and supporting documentation necessary to operate the vehicles
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

Required:

  • Bachelors of Science (Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering) degree or equivalent experience and training
  • Excellent computer skills – proficiency with day to day applications used for email, word processing, etc, as well as data analysis experience using Matlab, Python, or similar.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues across a wide range of technical disciplines
  • Must be able to work both independently and on a team and be able to work extended hours and travel as required
  • Read and speak English proficiently

Your responsibilities:
• Develop and implement flight test instrumentation equipment on the aircraft (strain gauges, thermocouples, accelerometers and a variety of other electrical components / sensors as well as data
recording and telemetry equipment)
• Manage the onboard ground station software and instrumentation configuration
• Support pre- and post-test briefings as well as ground and flight tests in accordance with established test plans and procedures
• Focus on a safe and efficient conduction of ground and flight tests
• Ensure sensor calibration/data accuracy and validity of data
• Temporary assignment overseas in support of flight test campaigns
Your qualifications:
• Minimum of three years working experience in instrumentation and/or electronics engineering
• Experience with harness builds, connector pin-outs, crimping, sensor and cable installations
• Desirably working experience in flight test instrumentation
• Ability to work to deadlines
• Experience in troubleshooting of hard and software systems
• Good team player skills, self-driven attitude and a great communicator
• Aviation Experience highly desired (knowledge of EASA Part 21 J&G and CS27 is an advantage)
• Good English language skills, both verbal and in writing, a working knowledge of German language

The job location is Joint Base Langley Eustis (JBLE), Virginia, supporting integration and testing of a myriad of systems on numerous conventional and Special Operations Aviation (SOA) aircraft. Scope: Provide subject matter and test and evaluation support for highly complex SOA-peculiar mission equipment and US Army common mission equipment. Successful performance requires extensive knowledge of the component and aircraft level qualification requirements and ability of interfacing effectively with aircraft systems integrators and systems engineers. The SME shall also be responsible for planning, executing, and reporting of developmental flight and ground tests that support research and advanced aviation initiatives for AID, DoD, and other Government agencies. Mission equipment may include one or more of the following: avionics (including aviation networking) hardware and software, aircraft survivability equipment (ASE) (active radio frequency and infrared countermeasures, passive infrared signature reduction equipment, etc.), sensor equipment (electro-optical, infrared, radar, laser, etc.), and weapons equipment (machine guns, rockets, missiles, and targeting/sighting systems).
Responsibilities: (Not all encompassing)
Act as Test Director and supervise flight test programs and all test flight activities on assigned projects and programs.
Coordinate and execute ground and flight testing or test-related activities for various research and development activities to include: airfield or off-site testing activities, test program management, project test support, and program management for test activities.
Provides technical, analytical, and program management support for SOA and conventional Army aircraft mission equipment programs.
Establishes and tracks metrics as they relate to cost, schedule and performance with each mission equipment integration effort.
Develops concise and accurate performance specifications and procurement documents. 

Interprets, refines and integrates user requirements as they relate to the development process.
Assists in all technical reviews associated with mission equipment integration efforts.
Independently estimates and evaluates cost and schedule and monitors vendor compliance with stated requirements.
Identifies potential risks and suggests appropriate courses of action should technical issues arise, or user requirements change.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a technical field is required.
Minimum of 15 years’ experience working with military aviation is required.
Minimum of 10 years’ acquisition or test experience supporting definition, development, qualification, and fielding of equipment is required.
Applicant must be able to obtain a Top Secret or Interim Top Secret security clearance.

Key Responsibilities and Activities

Test Engineer Responsibilities:

Required Skills and Experience
Requires an undergraduate degree in engineering with experience related to test engineering
Familiarity with the FAA certification process for Light Sport Aircraft and CFR Part 23 or Part 25 regulations
A Commercial Pilot certificate is required with FAA Class II physical
